Multimillion Dollar Ferraris Up for Auction in Monterey

On Aug. 15th and 16th RM Auctions is staging its 23rd annual Sports & Classics sale during the famed Monterey Auto Week in California, featuring 15 milestone Ferraris and more. In May, RM set a new world record for the most expensive car ever sold in auction history: $11 million for a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder formerly owned by actor James Coburn. Starring in the Monterey sale is a very similar car, a 1961 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, which is estimated at $3.7 million - $4.2 million but could well go for much more (the Coburn car sold for nearly double its estimate).

Also on offer: a 1962 400 Superamerica Coupe Aerodinamica, est. $1.5 million - $2 million, one of only 17 made; a 1967 275 GTB/4 Berlinetta, est. $1.6 million - $1.8 million; a 1973 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider, est. $1.4 million - $1.6 million, one of the last examples ever produced; a 1965 Ferrari GTB/6C Berlinetta, est. $800,000 - $1 million, pictured above; and a 1964 250 GT Lusso Berlinetta finished in green, est. $700,000 - $800,000.

Benz, Bugatti & Jag at Meadow Brook Auto Auction

On August 2nd, RM Auctions will sell of a stunning selection of classic cars, including a coveted Mercedes-Benz Gullwing (above), at the annual Meadow Brook Concours d'Élegance in Michigan. The event takes place at Meadow Brook Hall, the historic 110-room Tudor Revival mansion built in the 1920s by auto heiress Matilda Dodge Wilson. In May, RM set a world record by selling the 1961 Ferrari formerly owned by James Coburn which we wrote about for $11 million.

The Mercedes, a beautiful black 1956 300SL, is estimated at $575,000 - $675,000. We prefer it to the other, slightly more expensive Mercedes on offer, a 1936 500K three-position drophead coupe by Corsica, est. $600,000 - $750,000. Also included in the stunning sale: a 1937 Bugatti Type 57 Ventoux Coupe, est. $475,000 - $575,000; a 1930 Isotta-Fraschini 8A Convertible Sedan by Castagna, similar to the one featured in Sunset Boulevard, est. $400,000 - $600,000; and a 1954 Jaguar XK 120SE Roadster, est. $80,000 - $110,000. See the gallery for more.

Ferrari Is In The Custom Car Business

Custom luxury cars are no longer limited to just Pininfarina or Carrozzeria Touring because the delightful customization of Ferrari's own has begun. Have two million euros? Check. Choose a Ferrari chassis and powertrain of choice? Check. Customize your very own prancing horse sportscar...intriguing. There are a couple of limits, like no SUV's, wagons or sedans, and I am sure there is a level of taste expected since the company wouldn't want to place their emblem on just any crazy concoction but beyond that the possibilities are endless.

Classic Cars on Offer at First Greenwich Concours Sale

On Sunday June 8 London auction house Bonhams will stage its first ever auction in conjunction with the annual Greenwich Concours d'Elegance in Connecticut. The top-priced lots are rare racing cars prized by automotive historians, such as a 1931 Maserati Tipo 8C-2800 competition two-seater, est. $600,000 - $850,000, and a 1965 McLaren-Elva M1A Sports Racer, est. $250,000- $300,000. However, there are plenty of beautiful and highly collectible cars that one can actually drive on offer as well.

Among our favorites is this perfectly-restored British made 1956 AC Ace, est. $140,000 - 180,000, in British racing green, natch. Other highlights include: a 1963 Porsche 356B 1600 Super 90 Cabriolet, est. $110,000 - 130,000; a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTC/4 Coupe, est. $110,000 - $135,000; a 1974 Jaguar Series III V-12 XK-E Roadster, est. $50,000 - $70,000; a 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet, est. $100,000 - $150,000; and the steal of the sale, a 1979 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith II Saloon, est. only $25,000 - $35,000.

Fabulous Ferraris Go on the Block in Italy

An incredible collection of Ferraris spanning 50-plus years of the company's history goes up for auction this Sunday at the Ferrari factory in Maranello. The stars of the sale are undoubtedly a 1961 250 GT SWB California Spyder that belonged to The Magnificent Seven star James Coburn, which is estimated at $4.6 - $5.9 million; and a 1964 250 Le Mans, est. $6.5 million - $7.4 million, making it one of the most expensive Ferraris ever to go on the block. There are plenty of other incredible machines on offer in the Ferrari: Leggenda e Passione event being staged by RM Auctions, however.

Our personal favorite is this beautiful 1962 250 GT Lusso, the very first production unit and one of only three known examples raced, which is considerably cheaper at est. $1.2 million - $1.5 million. Other highlights include a 1990 Ferrari F40 Le Mans, est. $1.5 million - $2.1 million; a 2004 Enzo specially made for a member of a Middle Eastern royal family in a one-off shade of gray, est. $1.2 million - $1.5 million; and a dashing dark blue 1967 GTB/4, est. $1.2 million - $1.6 million. If you can't make it to Italy this weekend, LiveAuctioneers.com has opened bidding online, and will also carry streaming audio/video of the event.

Grandes Marques Auto Auction in Monaco Today

London auction house Bonhams is staging a Grandes Marques classic car auction in the principality of Monaco today featuring some of the world's most collectible automobiles. The star attraction - i.e. highest-priced lot - is an historic 1932 Bugatti Type 55 Super Sport that raced at Le Mans in 1934, which is estimated at about $4 - $5 million. However there are several very beautiful and more modern motorcars being sold for a fraction of that price.

For example, the gorgeous 1961 Aston Martin DB4 Competition Saloon pictured here, est. about $320,000 - $360,000, similar to the DB5 driven by James Bond (Sean Connery) in Goldfinger. Among our other favorites, as featured in the gallery below: A 1962 Bentley S3 Continental 'Flying Spur' Saloon, est. about $280,000 - $320,000; a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL 'Gullwing' Coupé, est. about $690,000 - $760,000; a 1966 Maserati Mistral 4000 Spyder, est. about $420,000 - $500,000; a 1994 Bugatti EB110GT Coupé, one of only 154 built, est. about $340,000 - $420,000; and a 1971 Ferrari 365GTB/4 'Daytona' Berlinetta, est. about $400,000 - $480,000.

A Magazine Just For Ferrari Owners

Ferrari and Condé Nast will be publishing a magazine just for Ferrari owners. The glossy international magazine will have an initial print run of 30,000 and is aimed at the peak of the luxury market. The magazine does not have an official name yet but it will be published four times a year with the first issue due out this summer. The editor in chief will be Antonio Ghini, Ferrari communications and brand management director for the last 15 years.

Superfast, The Ferrari Paintings of Dexter Brown

Dexter Brown has been painting the track and road triumphs and design progress of Ferrari for the last sixty years. Now, his masterpiece series dubbed Superfast will be bound into a limited edition book as well as displayed at the Pullman Gallery in London from May 1 to June 12. The book is over 300 pages and may be purchased either cloth bound (£375) or leather bound (£695), with only 550 copies of the book available. Brown captures the speed, excitement and glory of Ferrari in his colorful, flashy paintings -- a must have for any art and racing enthusiast.

Faux Ferraris?

I've seen plenty of Italian fakes in the form of Gucci and Prada knock-offs sold on the streets but this is the first I've heard of a faux Ferrari. Italian police have busted a ring of mechanics who have been building fake Ferraris. Like some of the people who buy fake purses, most of the purchasers of these cars knew they weren't purchasing real Ferraris. The flashy fakes were made from a combination of body parts from other types of automobiles along with a few genuine Ferrari parts strung together to form sham versions of Ferrari classics. Some of them sold for around $30,000 which is about a tenth of what you'd spend for the real deal.

Luxury Car Sales Fall

So the economy has been taking a hit lately, but as a general rule the highest of high end products haven't really been affected -- apparently those with money up to their ears haven't been feeling the pinch, until now.

Numbers are streaming in from luxury car brands reporting serious sales drops this year from 2007 -- Jaguar sales fell by 52% (whoa!), BMW by 27%, Porsche by 13%, and Land Rover by 17%. Even Ferrari (surprisingly) reported a decline for this past January, although they claim the drop from last year was both planned and expected.

It will be interesting to see what the rest of 2008 brings for the luxury car market.

First Ferrari to be Exhibited at Desert Concours

On March 1st, less than a month from now, the very first Ferrari ever built will be on display at the Inaugural Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance in Palm Springs. Chassis Number 01C hasn't made a public appearance in 20 years, and this appearance will be made even more special by that fact that the car has a unique history in the area -- it recorded its first ever western U.S. race win in Palm Springs back in 1951.

Many other rare cars will be appearing at the historic O'Donnell Golf club that day, and tickets are just $20 for regular admission or a limited number of VIP tickets will be available for $150.

The Ferrari F430 Spider Bio Fuel

Fast high-end sports cars are generally not considered to be eco-friendly, with their gas guzzling turbo engines and energy-sucking luxury features. But that's not to say they aren't trying -- Ferrari for example, revealed their F430 Spider Bio Fuel model earlier this week in Detroit. It burns a mix of 85% natural ethanol and 15% gasoline, which results in +10hp (meaning its got a solid 500hp to work with) and a 5% increase in gas mileage over its gas-only counterpart. As for now the F430 Spider Bio Fuel is only a concept, but Ferrari says they'd like to put it into production as part of their efforts to cut emissions by 40% by the year 2012. Like the looks of it?
